Many Americans are still dealing with the fallout of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, including loss of property, income and the ability to carry out seemingly normal activities. Additionally, taxpayers in Washington State, Alaska and the Pacific Northwest and West Coast have suffered from floods, mudslides and other natural disasters. Americans across the Midwest and the country have also been impacted by disasters that occurred throughout this year.
Per the IRS, “eligible taxpayers are individuals and businesses affected by various disasters that occurred during the late spring, summer and early fall of this year. For extension filers, payments on the 2023 tax year returns are not eligible for the additional time because they were originally due last spring before any of these disasters occurred.” Consequently, these taxpayers have been given automatic relief as long as their “address of record is in a disaster-area locality.”
